Sun and Skin

Sun rays, which are the source of life for all living things, especially humans, also have aspects that negatively affect human health. In recent years, as a result of the thinning and drilling of the ozone layer, the qualities of the sun rays reaching the earth have changed and their intensity has increased. In parallel, the harmful effects of the sun on the skin occur more frequently and more intensively.

Harmful Effects of Solar Rays on the Skin:

  • a) - Acute (short-term) effects. Itching, erythema, burning, water retention, sensitivity, blistering
  • b) - Chronic (long-term) effects.

Harmful effects such as skin aging, wrinkles, maculation, thickening, pre-cancerous redness and thickening, skin cancers, shape, color and character changes of existing moles are frequently encountered.

To avoid the harmful effects of the aforementioned sun rays:

  • a) - Not being outdoors at times when the sun rays are intense on the earth (10:00-15:00)
  • b) - Using hats, umbrellas, patternless light color partly thick cotton garments
  • c) - Sunscreen creams with a protection factor of 20-50 suitable for the skin should be used on exposed skin areas. Those with light skin, red hair, colored-eyes, vitiligo (bleach), albinism, porphyria, sun allergy, xeroderma  pigmentosum, those with a disease that is exacerbated by sun rays, should comply with this during the daytime in all seasons of the year.

In case of thickening of the skin areas that see the sun, continuous erythema, color darkening, bleeding wound formation, sudden discoloration and bleeding of previously existing moles, a dermatologist should be consulted without delay
