What is Asthma?

Narrowing of the airways is a life-long chronic disease characterized by recurrent coughing and wheezing, which impairs breathing. It is estimated that there are approximately 300 million asthma patients in the world. In our country, asthma is seen in 7 out of every 100 adults. Asthma is a disease that negatively affects a person's quality of life.

How is Asthma Diagnosed?

Before diagnosing asthma, the doctor takes a detailed history of the patient. It is questioned whether coughing attacks are frequent, whether the cough occurs at night or during the day, whether there is a family history of asthma, and whether there are allergic symptoms. Then, medicated pulmonary function test, chest X-ray, allergy test examinations are performed.

Asthma Risk Factors

• Family history of asthma and genetic predisposition
• Occupations that cause asthma (carpentry, poultry farming, cleaning work, plastic / chemical / pharmaceutical industries..)
• Exposure to allergens during infancy
• Maternal smoking during pregnancy
• Parental smoking at home and other reasons

Asthma Patients Should Consider

• Pets should be avoided
• No smoking in the house
• Fragrant detergents and perfumes should not be used at home.
• The house should be ventilated frequently.
• In the season when pollen increases, one should not go outside unless it is necessary.
