Anesthesia; Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist = This is a procedure performed by an anesthesiologist and is the name of a series of medical applications developed to ensure that the patient does not feel pain during the operation, tolerate the intervention and to provide that the patient doesn’t remember the procedure and feel comfort after the operation.

Anesthesia means “numbness” as a word. Therefore, operations are painless and not remembered by the patient. However, it is necessary but not enough to remove the sensation in order to have a safe operation. During the operation, your vital functions such as breathing and circulation are kept under control. Moreover, your anesthesiologist is your protector in all respects.

Your anesthesiologist is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, has four years of residency in this field, is able to use high-level medical technology, and allows you to safely pass through the surgery and restore your health with this knowledge and skills. Anesthesia technicians are also an important part of the anesthesia team to assist the anesthesiologist throughout the surgery.

Your anesthesiologist will examine you before the surgery and decide with you the most suitable anesthesia method for the operation.

How many types of anesthesia are there?

General Anesthesia: If the patient is completely unconscious under anesthesia, this is called “General Anesthesia. Many drugs are used for general anesthesia. These are the drugs used from the vein, as well as gases used with oxygen. Required drugs are selected according to the characteristics of each patient.

Regional Anesthesia: The numbing of a part of the body (arm, leg, chest, etc.) by needle is called “Regional Anesthesia. It has types such as spinal, epidural, nerve block.

Local anesthesia: In small surgical procedures, only the part to be operated is anesthetized. The physician that will perform the operation may apply the anesthesia procedure, but your anesthesiologist will be there for you if your vital functions need to be monitored or calmed down.

Your anesthesiologist and you

Usually when the anesthesiologist is working, the patient does not know what he is doing and how He/She helps him/her because he/she is asleep. The anesthesiologist is always there for you and before and after the operation.

Before the surgery

• He/She examines your health status. He/She visits you in your room, tells you what to do and answers your questions.
• He/She recommends the examination, treatment and care required.
• He/She gives you the medication before the anesthesia.
• He/She chooses the most appropriate anesthesia method according to the results of the examinations and your disease.

During the surgery

He/She gives you the necessary medicines so that you don't feel pain in the surgery, controls the regular functioning of your heart and lungs, makes the necessary treatments for these and other organs to work well, and gives you serum, blood and other medicines.
You are unaware of all the work that your anesthesiologist has done to make the surgeon's job easier and keep you alive!

During the surgery, your anesthesiologist is with you, your closest protector and the guardian of your entire being. When you have an anesthesiologist with you, your surgeon knows that your care is in safe hands and pays all his attention to his own work.

After the surgery

The anesthesiologist is not only responsible to put you to sleep, but also to wake you up. Another important work of him/her is to get rid of the effects of the medications you take during the surgery, to prepare and apply the necessary care and treatments to prevent you from feeling pain after surgery and to stay healthy. In recent years, postoperative pain has been relieved by the anesthesiologist using a method that is under your control (patient controlled analgesia).
All this shows that under appropriate conditions, anesthesia performed by people with sufficient information is extremely safe and will provide you with comfort during the operation and more importantly, you will undergo the operation.

Anesthesiologist outside the operating room

Anesthesiology is a more comprehensive branch of medicine than it is supposed. Nowadays, anesthesiologists have many works outside the operating room. Anesthesiologist's diploma indicates that he is an “Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialist”. Reanimation means “revitalization, that is, all efforts to ensure survival by applying basic and advanced life support to patients whose life have been interrupted for any reason until the cause disappears. This approach is the basis of Intensive Care Units that bring many people to life. Intensive Care Units are supervised by anesthesiologists because of their experience in intensive follow-up of their patients in surgery.

In recent years, the Department of Algology has developed rapidly within the modern medicine and has reached its present level. Everyone complained about severe pain at some point in their life. Anesthesiologists play an active and primary role in this area because of their experience in eliminating pain during the surgery. Many methods have been developed to control postoperative acute pain, painless delivery and treatment of chronic pain that cannot be relieved.
